Originally publish on the Best Car website an article claims that Mazda and Toyota will share the next generation MX5 platform for the both the Mazda MX5 and Toyota sports car platform, potentially, the next generation Toyota 86.

The original Best Car article published in March 2025 reported there was significant potential that Toyota and Mazda were co-developing a next-generation sports car together.
Forbes magazine reported that Toyota and Mazda had actually signed a memorandum of understanding on a partnership in 2015, which developed into a capital alliance with cross-shareholding in 2017.
Best Car reports that a number of chief engineers from Mazda have now been dispatched to Toyota City to develop the next-generation MX-5 and GR86 using the current model MX5 as a base-line.
